Centralized Waste

Centralized Waste

Centralized Waste is a large component of reaching our Zero Waste by 2028 Goal. We need the entire Trojan Family to participate in order for us to reach our goal of diverting 90% of our waste from landfills!

Buildings that Have the Centralized Waste Program

Click on the tabs below to find out more info!

Centralized waste bins have three streams consisting of compost, recycling, and landfill. The bins are installed in strategic locations giving occupants the proper disposal options every time they have waste to dispose of. The program will replace all existing trash and recycle bins and remove deskside bins. Building occupants will need to take their waste to a communal waste station.

what goes un the bins

Do:

  • Separate Waste
  • Check for “compostable” label

Don’t:

  • Throw a container with food in the compost.(separate container and food)
  •  Move bins–These bins have been placed to adhere to Fire Life and Safety protocols and must stay in place to keep the building compliant.
  •  Stack items on top of bins

These bins are not for:

  • Events (25+ people)
  • Luncheons/meetings/pizza parties
  • Office cleanouts
  • Books

Trash

  • Brought to a transfer station and then to a landfill (if recycling or compost is placed in the trash it DOESN’T get separated).

Recycle

  • Goes to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)
  • Here all of the items are separated into their respective category

Compost

  • Compost is used for feedstock, soil, and mulch
  • Collected and brought to an industrial compost facility (Agromin)

Why are desk-side bins being removed?

  • Increases diversion
  • Makes us conscious of our waste
  • Waste will no longer sit in individual offices for multiple days
  • Everyone has access to compost

Employee well being

  • Research shows we should move around three minutes for every 30-60 minutes of staying stationary
  • Encourages short screen breaks
  • Helps reduce long periods of sitting still
